SERVPRO of Metrocrest is the mold damage specialists in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area

6/6/2019 (Permalink)

If a pipe breaks underneath your home in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, it is possible that water can affect structural components without you realizing it. Water can leak into your crawl space and cause many problems. Many crawl spaces already have elevated temperatures and humidity levels making it a prime location for microbial growth.

Extra moisture that gets added to a crawl space increases the chances of a fungus developing. For mold damage in the Dallas/Ft, Worth area to take place, it needs an organic food source, the right temperature, and moisture. If fungi grow inside your home, they can cause health effects with some people.

Once microbes develop inside a structure, they can quickly reproduce and cause problems in other locations. Once the spores mature, they form structures called Hyphae. The hyphae grow down into the material as well as up above it and across the surface. The hyphae then release spores into the airflow of the building that float around until they settle down into a new location.

If mold develops inside your crawl space, it can cause damage to structural components. Fungi can also create foul odors that can affect your entire house. Microbes inside your crawl space also can make their way into your ventilation system causing air quality issues.

Whenever SERVPRO of Metrocrest technicians remediate fungal issues, we take extreme measure to prevent spores from spreading to unaffected areas. Before any work begins the crawl space gets sealed off so that no dust or debris created by the restoration process spreads across the building. We use poles and thick plastic to build a containment chamber around the affected area of the crawl space.

If the entire crawl space is contaminated, then the floor joists get sealed off so that the insulation in the floor does not get affected. Once the affected region is sealed off from the rest of the home, the contaminated materials get removed. If the mold has not gone too deep into the floor joists they can be sanded down and restored. After sanding the affected wood gets sprayed with a specialized sealant paint.

Before the containment chamber gets taken down, we vacuum all dust and debris with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter. If you ever need help with microbial growth inside your crawl space, call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If you have mold growing in or around your home,  call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400. We are always here to help!

Microbial growth inside and outside your home

3/12/2019 (Permalink)

Microbial growth can not only be found inside your home but outside as well. It can be found around pipes, windows, or roofs on the outside of your home. If flooding has occurred inside your home, mold will grow in drywall, upholstery, and carpet, just to name a few. Microbial growth can be many unusual colors, smell musty, and will often look like spots. Regardless of what type of mold it is, it needs to be removed. If you see visible mold, do not disturb it by attempting to clean the area yourself, touching the mold, or blowing air across affected areas. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate throughout your home. If you suspect mold, keep loved ones out of the area, turn off fans and the HVAC system, and contact SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400. We are specially trained professionals and will ensure your home and belongings are properly cleaned and dried to inhibit mold growth.

Mold Prevention during the winter months

12/19/2018 (Permalink)

The wet season in the winter months is one of the best times of the year for molds to grow and expand. Often mold is contained near sources of water where it can easily grow and reproduce. As it grows, mold can breakdown and compromise the integrity and strength of the source in which it lives.

Prevention will help keep it at bay in your home.

  • Keep all areas clean
  • Make sure there is good air circulation
  • Prevent mold and water damage by turning off the water flow to broken appliances and pipes.
  • Replace cracked or defective mortar. If you find wet areas, inspect the outside drainage system.

  • One can get rid of humidity or dampness within a building or home by heating it for a short time. After heating, open up the doors and windows, or use an exhaust fan to let out the air that is moist.
  • Hire a professional roofing contractor to cover a damaged roof with a tarp.
  • If there are freezing temperatures, take measures to insulate pipes, inside and out to ensure they will not crack or bust.
  • Make sure all theseals on the windows and doors are not compromised and in good working condition.
  • Clean and repair roof gutters regularly
  • Make sure the ground around your building slopes away from the foundation so water does not colleact around or enter into it.
  • Act quickly if you see condensation on windows, pipes, or walls inside a building

Mold Damage Tips

8/28/2018 (Permalink)

If your home in the Dallas, Texas area develops a mold issues, it is important to get the situation under control before it spreads. You also must be conscious of the effect of mold on your home, such as that from black mold. Leaving the problem unattended is not the answer. Here are some things you do as soon as you notice issues with mold in your home.

Stop Spores from Spreading:

Your first move should be to stop the spores from spreading. They spread throughout the air. Make sure you turn off your HVAC system. Try to isolate the area where the black mold is growing. You can shut doors or hang up a barrier if needed. Doing this helps to contain the spores and prevent them from traveling all over your home.

Stop Water Source:

You also need to stop the moisture. Figure out where it is coming from. If it is a water pipe, then turn off the water. If it is a leak, then try to put up a temporary barrier to stop it from getting into your home. The moisture problem is what helps the mold grow. If it is still present, your black mold issues will just continue to get worse.

Mold Prevention Tips

5/1/2018 (Permalink)

If you see mold in your home call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400.

Mold can grow in several places in your home, some areas are obvious while others may be the farthest from your mind. Mold prevention is accomplished with thorough inspections of all areas of your home on a regular basis. It only takes 24-48 hours for mold to grow and to start causing issues. Being proactive and checking all areas in your home can save you time, energy, and dollars. Know where your moisture points are and be sure to dry them regularly. Fix any leaks that you find and use proper ventilation throughout your home. These small mold prevention tips will go a long way in keeping your home healthy and safe from mold.

  • Keep humidity levels as low as you can—no higher than 50%–all day long. An air conditioner or dehumidifier will help you keep the level low. Bear in mind that humidity levels change over the course of a day with changes in the moisture in the air and the air temperature, so you will need to check the humidity levels more than once a day.
  • Be sure your home has enough ventilation. Use exhaust fans which vent outside your home in the kitchen and bathroom. Make sure your clothes dryer vents outside your home.
  • Fix any leaks in your home’s roof, walls, or plumbing so mold does not have moisture to grow.
  • Clean up and dry out your home thoroughly and quickly (within 24–48 hours) after flooding.
  • Add mold inhibitors to paints before painting.
  • Clean bathrooms with mold-killing products.
  • Remove or replace carpets and upholstery that have been soaked and cannot be dried promptly. Consider not using carpet in rooms or areas like bathrooms that may have a lot of moisture.

If you think your home might have mold (you’re seeing it or smelling it), call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400, we are certified in mold remediation. We are always here to help!

Understanding How Mold Grows and Spreads in Your Home

4/10/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is one of the most neglected home maintenance problems that can quickly become a catastrophe. Spotting the damage early is the key to safe and effective remediation.

Mold damage restoration of your Dallas home is not a DIY project. Efficient and successful remediation is a job for the professionals with years of experience and the right safety equipment. Trying to eliminate mold by yourself can help it spread to unaffected areas amplifying the problem. It is essential to understand the basics of mold and take the right precautions for fast and safe remediation.

What causes mold growth?

Mold begins its life from a microscopic spore; they are like seeds that can germinate in the right conditions. Interestingly, mold spores are present everywhere. So, it may not be possible to eliminate them entirely, but it is entirely possible to prevent the creation of conditions favorable for their germination.

One of the most important conditions for the spores to germinate is moisture. If the surfaces contain an elevated level of humidity, the spores can absorb it, swell and germinate giving rise to a network of filamentous structures called hyphae. Some of the hyphae grow into the surface providing an anchor for the network, while others can bear spores on their tops.

If the network of the hyphae is disturbed, these spores can become airborne and settle in other parts of your home. While cleaning the mold growth, SERVPRO professionals use a barrier system to prevent these spores from reaching the uncontaminated parts of your home. They also have the necessary equipment to clean the settled spores and prevent them from reaching other parts of your home.

Mold loves warm and moist environments.

Mold requires the right combination of temperature and moisture to germinate and grow. The ideal temperature being between 68 and 86 degrees. With these conditions in place, the settled sores can quickly germinate and form a network of hyphae in no time.

The most important thing to control is the moisture level. SERVPRO Professionals can determine the residual moisture level in your home using state-of-the-art moisture sensing equipment. If the levels are high, they can correct them by addressing the underlying problem.

MOLD, It is a homeowner’s worst nightmare:

There are several things to look out for that indicate you might have mold or an area that is prime for mold growth.

Strange Odors
Mold, whether it is visible or not, emits an unusual and unpleasant odor. If an area in your home persistently smells musty, there is a good possibility there is mold in the room.

Mold Growth
There are so many varieties of mold that you can t really identify the type based on specific shape, size or color. It can appear as a furry, dark growth, as a black stain, or as black, white, orange, green or brown specks. Rather than look for out-of-the-ordinary, multi-colored flakes in every inch of your home, identify areas that are moist and then look for possible signs of mold. The fungus thrives in cool, damp areas, and it will be much easier to find it by limiting your search to areas that are affected by excess moisture.

Symptoms
Your health can be a telling sign if there is mold in the home. Symptoms of a mold allergy include a consistently runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, dizziness, headaches and even memory loss.

Condensation
Whether there is excess moisture on your windows or condensation dripping from your pipes, it is likely there is a great deal of moisture in your home. As a result, your home is becoming an ideal breeding ground for mold, and it indicates that mold might already be present in your home.

Water Problems
If your home has ever had moisture problems, whether a toilet overflowed or a sewer backed up, it is at risk for mold. The best places to look for mold are areas where water remained for a long time. If your home has ever flooded, mold could grow underneath the flooring and behind walls.

The Solution:
For areas that have already fallen victim to mold, there is hope. SERVPRO of Metrocrest is a local leader the North Dallas community in mold remediation and here to help! Please call (972) 233-8400 and we will make it “Like it never even happened.”

Signs of Water Problems That May Be Mold in North Texas

Water Leaks Can Create Mold - Call SERVPRO of Metrocrest

Signs of Water Problems that can turn into Mold Issues for North Texas

If you have had any long term moisture problems in your house, it's usually inevitable they will lead to mold beginning to grow. So, if you know you've had some water problems in your home then it's a pretty good sign you could have mold. Some signs that you have a moisture problem include water stains or discoloration on walls, floors or ceilings in your house. Seeing these could be a clue that there is mold growing within or behind the material. Another sign of a moisture problem is surface abnormalities like peeling, bubbling or cracking of the paint or wallpaper. If your walls are bowed, bulging or warped it probably means moisture has gotten into them. Another clue is if the surface of walls or other materials feel damp.

The above signs of water problems in homes are usually created by leaks. However, if you already know that you have had a water leak (such as leaking pipes or a leaking ceiling) then just that knowledge by itself, even if you don't see signs of water damage, is a good sign that you might have mold growing in your house around the area where the leak was. Mold growth from leaks can often be hidden. If the leak was behind a wall or other surface then any mold will probably be hidden behind the surface too. Even if the leak was not behind a surface there could still be mold hidden out of view behind a wall or other surface from water which seeped through.

Below is a list of common places for mold growth:

  • Walls
  • Ceiling
  • Windows
  • Floor
  • Furniture
  • Insulation
  • Air Ducts
  • Attics

Mold Growth on Drywall in Carrollton, TX

If you suspect that your Dallas, TX area home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO of Metrocrest can inspect, assess and remediate your property.

SIGNS OF MOLD

Smelling a Mold Odor

When you have mold growing hidden away in your house, often a moldy smell might be the only clue that it's there. Don't ignore mold odors if you can't see any mold. You should thoroughly inspect your home before any mold problems get worse.

Seeing Signs of Mold Growth

Visible mold growth might seem like an obvious sign of mold. However many people don't notice small amounts of mold growth or they think it's just soot or dirt. Sometimes people simply ignore visible mold in their house.

If you can see mold growth, even if it's only small, you should take action immediately. Small mold patches can spread and the fact that there is any mold shows that the conditions in your home are right for mold to grow.

If you don't take care of mold it will soon become a bigger problem. Visible mold growth could also be a sign that there is a much larger mold colony growing hidden away from view.

Sometimes you might not realize there is mold in your house, especially if it is unusual looking mold. Some mold growth looks white and thread-like. Other mold appears as clusters of small black spots. Mold can be black, gray-brown, gray-green or white in color. Mold growing behind wallpaper made of vinyl can even appear orange, pink or purple.
